When I was a kid, our artificial tree’s stand was mounted on a 2’ x 2’ piece of plywood to steady the base, then there were eye hooks mounted on the window casing about 4 feet from the ground (these remained there year round, obscured by the curtains). Once the tree was assembled, a length of twine was wrapped around the tree's trunk and secured to the hooks. Apparently, between the kids and the cats, they had had some problems, and my dad decided to put an end to tree toppling forever.
Next time I see him, I should ask about the incident that prompted him to break out the saw, drill and twine. Fun memories.

We had one of those incidents, but I was in college at the time. Mom was not happy about how the tree looked - she thought it looked unsteady, so she asked Dad to wire it to the wall. He kept telling her it was fine. Then, one morning, she heard this muffled "WHOOPMH" noise. Yup - tree fell over! It was wired to the wall from that day forward, every year. I think the eye hook might have been still in the wall when they sold the house, too.
ReplyDeleteFrom Robin's Mama: The reason for the trussing up of the artificial tree was because the plastic base was flimsy. At least that's what I tell myself. Do you remember the tree that collapsed? I can never figure out how it happened, but one morning we got up and found nearly every branch pulled out of the stalk and lying in a heap around the tree, decorations and all. We had to start all over.
