I was so sure that I was the quickest crochet study on the planet. A prodigy, if you will. But then last night, I came to a realization: I've been doing it wrong. I know a few posts ago I talked about doing it wrong in a tongue-in-cheek manner, but this time I mean it. How embarrassing. I've been only picking up the front loop of the stitch, à la knitting. I didn't realize until last night that you're supposed to pick up both loops. argh. The worst part is that I realized it AFTER asking a really stupid bonehead question about it in public. On Ravelry, the single-largest conglomeration of fiber folk on the planet. What a maroon I am.
I hate being a maroon.
But at least I can be grateful that I've figured out the right way to do it for the future. Off to pick a pattern for the next project. I'm so very addicted to yarn (I'm obviously also grateful for sheep).

aw man. Don't feel bad. I have been knitting for about as long as I can remember and I have not been able to teach myself how to crochet. I wouldn't point and laugh...Im still in awe of your valentine hearts!
ReplyDeleteAt least you learned the right way before developing your way into too much more of a habit!
ReplyDeleteWhen I started knitting I had my stitches twisted and tight. it was so hard to knit. I was constantly fighting the thread and the needles. I felt so embarrassed when a friend grabbed my project and rerouted all of my stitches, but it has been easy knitting ever since!
Actually, there are patterns where you're supposed to pick up the front loop or t he back loop only. It's not wrong, it's just different, just like knit is different from purl is different from ktbl.
ReplyDeleteHmm...looks like the only one pointing and laughing is you. LOL I can crochet, can't knit to save mah life. ;) I'm thankful that you CAN cuz it's so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThat goodness for public forums where you can ask silly questions and make embarrassing revelations!
ReplyDeleteThe hearts still look awesome - wrong way or no.
It's funny that you mention that because I just found out at the knitting meetup this past wednesday that I was doing the same thing with my crochet! Sadly, I'd already made most of the project by that time, but at least I know for the future. Looking forward to seeing you again in a few weeks. :)
ReplyDeleteP.S., I don't think you're a dark shade of redish purple (aka, maroon). I don't think you're a moron either. ;)
